Safeguarding in Home Care

What to Do Next

Use this guidance if you notice anything that causes concern, including changes in behaviour, unexplained injuries, neglect, or situations that do not feel right.

  1. Do not question the client or anyone else

  2. Do not investigate or try to gather proof

  3. Continue the visit safely and respectfully

  4. Record what you saw or heard using clear, factual language

  5. Report the concern immediately

How to report

  • During office hours: Contact the office as soon as possible. Call Colette Russell, Registered Manager (07889 706852)

  • Out of hours: Call the on-call number immediately

  • If you believe someone is in immediate danger, call 999 first, then inform the office or on-call

What to include when reporting

  • The client’s name and location

  • What you saw, heard or noticed (facts only)

  • When and where it happened

  • Anything the client said, using their own words where possible

Remember

  • You do not need proof

  • You are not responsible for deciding whether it is abuse

  • Reporting concerns is part of your role and will never get you into trouble

If you have any safeguarding concern, no matter how small or uncertain it feels, we will listen and take it seriously.
