Food Safety & Nutrition

What to Do Next

Use this guidance if you notice changes in eating habits, food safety concerns, or worries about nutrition.

What to look out for

  • Skipped meals or very small portions

  • Reliance on snacks or biscuits

  • Out-of-date or spoiled food

  • Empty fridge or cupboards

  • Weight loss, low energy, or repeated illness

What to do

  1. Follow the care plan for meal preparation and support

  2. Encourage regular meals and fluids, offering choices where possible

  3. Check food dates and storage during visits where appropriate

  4. Respect preferences, while noting patterns or changes

  5. Record concerns clearly and factually

When to report

Report to the office if:

  • Eating habits have changed noticeably

  • Food safety concerns are identified

  • Weight loss or poor appetite is ongoing

  • The care plan no longer reflects what you’re seeing

Food safety reminders

  • Always wash hands before food preparation

  • Keep raw and cooked foods separate

  • Follow use-by dates, not just best-before

  • Never taste food to check if it’s safe

Remember

  • Nutrition is part of overall wellbeing, not just meals

  • Small changes can have a big impact over time

  • Reporting concerns early allows the right support to be put in place
