Manual Handling
What to Do Next
Use this guidance if you are unsure about a move, feel under pressure to help quickly, or if something doesn’t feel safe.
Stop and think
If a move:
-
is not in the care plan
-
requires equipment you haven’t been trained on
-
feels rushed, awkward, or unsafe
then do not go ahead.
Feeling unsure is a sign to stop, not push on.
What to do
-
Pause the situation and reassure the person
-
Follow the care plan exactly (unless there are unforeseen hazards in doing so)
-
Use the equipment provided and only if you are trained to do so
-
Do not attempt a lift or move you feel uncomfortable with
-
Contact the office if the situation can’t be managed safely
If the person asks you to help anyway
-
Explain calmly that you need to follow the care plan
-
Reassure them that this is about keeping everyone safe
-
Never allow embarrassment, pressure, or time to influence your decision
When to report
Report to the office if:
-
A person’s mobility has changed
-
Equipment is missing, faulty, or no longer suitable
-
A move feels unsafe or cannot be completed as planned
-
You were close to attempting an unsafe move
Remember
-
Most manual handling injuries happen during “small” movements
-
Wanting to help is natural; stopping is sometimes the safest help
-
You will always be supported for choosing safety
